Innovation and never standing still are vital for a business to thrive

When I spoke with Scarborough Business Hero, John Easby, Managing Director of Adverset Media Solutions about his experiences of doing business in Scarborough, he gave me a potted history of the firm and some clues to their success.

Adverset provide complete marketing solutions for business including design, printing, signage, web, a full promotional service and consultancy.

The business kicked off when John and his fellow director Brian Hodgson were working for a free newspaper advertising in Scarborough. It dawned on them that they could produce the artwork/origination themselves. They bought one of the first Apple Macs at the dawn of desktop publishing. The paper they’d worked for used aging technology/equipment, so Adverset were able to supply them with fully piece bromide advert artwork ready to publish. Innovators from the start!

Scarborough has been good for Adverset in many ways and as other businesses have disappeared, it’s provided a good opportunity for the business to carve its own niche. They’re constantly looking for new ideas and are about product innovation. They never stand still or rest on their laurels.

You can tell that John just loves finding solutions for other businesses. He loves the challenge and appreciates that no business can stand still if it wants to survive and grow. The pace of change is incredible. While technology previously was replaced every 20 years, now it can be as little as 3 years. But thinking and planning ahead for change leads to new opportunities, for example their personalised wallpaper product, for which images, size and price can be established and then purchased online.

When I asked John about key challenges for his business, one of the major concerns was transport. Just simple things like getting paper delivered consistently, was achievable, but difficult logistically. Poor transport links and the associated perception of being far from big cities has been a common theme through my Doing Business in Scarborough project with some businesses experiencing this as a benefit and others as a major disadvantage.

More about the Doing Business in Scarborough Project

My Doing Business in Scarborough project was born out of a comment a business owner made to me about doing business in Scarborough. It inspired me to find out more about perceptions of doing business in Scarborough from other people based in the town. I’ve collected a very interesting range of insights and experiences with common challenges and personal ups and downs. This will ultimately form the basis of my book. Until that’s completed, part of some of my interviews will be published here to celebrate the wonderful range of businesses we have in our town. We are certainly not just a holiday destination!
